Hamel-LeSage Studio is the happy collaboration of two friends and partners, over twenty five years of weaving and tailoring experience and the desire to create Liturgical Vesture that possesses beauty and grace.
Artists and partners of HLS, Marc Hamel and Ed LeSage, have been handweavers for some twenty five years. Marc is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a degree in Theology and a concentration in Medieval studies. Ed is a graduate
of St. John's Seminary with a degree in Philosophy and a Master of Divinity. Both are former Trappist monks who first learned their craft while in the monastery and have been perfecting and addicted to it ever since. The monastery is also where they began their work with vesture design and tailoring. Marc did his weaving apprenticeship with Ms. Carol Markarian and Mrs. Libby Janes. Ed apprenticed with Marc. In subsequent years further study and consultation was done with Joyce S. Rettstadt of Princeton, Massachusetts. Ms. Rettstadt studied Textile Design at Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and later received a Masters Degree from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts with a thesis entitled History and Use of the Chasuble in the Christian Church.
The major focus of our studio is the design and construction of church vesture using both commercial and our own handwoven fabrics. We have two looms and never, it seems, enough time or hands.
